Smudging is a ceremony tied to many indigenous cultures for purifying or cleansing the soul of negative thoughts of a person or place. It involves the burning of white sage and other sacred herbs or holy woods such as Palo Santo.

A 2016 research project for the University of Mississippi established that white sage (Salvia apiana) is rich in compounds that activate certain receptors in the brain. These receptors are responsible for elevating mood levels, reducing stress, and even alleviating pain.

First burn the Sage to rid a space of negative energies, then follow by burning the Palo Santo for new positive energy or as a natural incense.
