Protecting your energy this festive season
As mothers, we often carry the weight of creating magic for our families during the holidays—organising everything from wrapping gifts to planning outings, managing meal prep, and even finding prizes for the school fair etc But this mental load can quickly become overwhelming, especially when we try to shoulder it all alone.
Recently, I wrote an open letter to my family and let it all out. I listed every detail of what goes into making this season special—the tasks, the planning, the endless behind-the-scenes effort. It was a moment of vulnerability, but also a powerful exercise in letting go of resentment and sharing the load. The response was eye-opening: I received a teary, “I didn’t know you did SO much!”
And that’s the thing—how could they know if we don’t tell them? This isn’t about seeking praise or proving you’re the “best mom.” It’s about fostering connection, gratitude, and understanding. By being open, I was able to teach my kids an important lesson: the magic they experience doesn’t just happen. It’s created with love, effort, and care—and they’re privileged to have it. But it’s also a magic they can take part in. Sharing the responsibility not only lightens your load but also allows your family to be active participants in the joy, not just passive recipients.
So here’s my nudge to other moms: don’t carry it alone. (Create space for that supportive cup of tea or ritual that lights you up. What feels good?)
Invite your family into the process, be honest about what goes into it, and give them the opportunity to contribute. You’ll find it’s not just a relief for you—it’s a gift for them too.
